  I found this page after I'd worked out my own solution. Fortunately the maxim of an "analog Hi8 camcorder and a Macintosh" is basically what I ended up with, except for Win9x. To shorten a long story considerably (original is at http://mikemee.com/geeking6.html), I've found that a reasonable analog camera (mine is the Sony TRV-6 which works great in low light) combined with the Pinnacle Studio DC10+ card and included software quickly creates videos that are great when destined for web viewing. They're probably not great for recording back to video tape, but that's not what I needed. The biggest gotcha is sound. So far most videos have been baby shots, and the on-camera microphone gets lots of us encouraging the baby to say something - and very little of her responses. So the next purchase should be a solution to that - once I work out what that is (if we give a mic to her to hold she'll just try and eat it...).
